Behind the Scenes

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him.” 1 Corinthians 2:9

In summers past, I made all the plans and kept them a secret from my kids. I just called everything an “adventure.” I thought it would be more fun for my kids that way. Plus, it made it easier for me if something got canceled, or the weather didn’t cooperate. I could easily make new plans, and my kids would be none-the-wiser.

Now that they’re older, I’ve been giving them the choice: I can keep things a surprise, or I can tell them if they want to know. Their reactions have been interesting…

Oddly enough, my oldest son, Zack, still wants things to be a surprise. I love that, as a teenager, he still wants to maintain the child-like wonder of not knowing. I find it endearing. I’m also deeply touched that he still trusts me enough to come up with fun things to do without his input.

Reflecting on this during a recent bad day of my own, I discovered I’m downright jealous of him. I was stewing in resentment because we moms don’t really get a chance to decompress from the chaotic school year and truly relax. Instead, we’re busy behind the scenes doing all the work to create fun activities to help our kids relax and have fun during the summer.

That’s when it clicked: God’s creating “adventures” for us moms all the time. He too is behind the scenes doing all the work, planning amazing things for us: events and interactions that could fill us. But we’re too busy making our plans to be surprised by His.

It’s only when we step back, renew our child-like sense of wonder, and trust God enough to let things unfold that we’ll be able to experience the “adventures” He has in store for us. If and when we do, I’m sure our need for rest and recreation will be met.

Questions for Reflection:

     * Am I too busy making plans for my kids to let God’s plan for me unfold?

     * How can I take a step back and renew my own child-like sense of wonder?

    • Thanks so much, Jess! After I wrote this, I decided that in the midst of all this rain, God’s “adventure” for me was to sit on the couch, watch lots of movies and do a jigsaw puzzle. Man oh man do I feel refreshed and renewed!!!
