This week has been a foggy one where I live in New Hampshire. Consequently, it’s been hard to see more than 200 feet ahead when driving around town. It got me thinking.

I wasn’t the only one. As I was reflecting on it from my perspective, my son, Mason, shared his, completely unprompted.

My take was that as I drove, I had to give up trying to see too far down the road. It was impossible. There was a wall of fog blocking it completely from view. Instead, I had no choice but to adjust to the unsettling feeling of only seeing what was directly in front of me, and navigate that.

Mason’s take was that it was all an adventure. Suddenly, our everyday route was filled with mystery. In his eyes, because things only became clear the closer we got to them, there was a surprise around every corner.

I found it fascinating that we thought so differently. Clearly, Mason’s perspective is the one filled with more trust and hope. He has no doubt that with me behind the wheel, we’ll get to where we need to go, safely and responsibly. Free of all worry and anxiety, he can see the good in everything, and celebrate it.

I believe that’s what Jesus meant when he said we all need to have a child-like faith. We need to trust that no matter what chaos is blanketing our world in confusion right now, no matter what uncertainly prevents us from seeing too far down the road, God’s at the wheel. He will safely get us to where we need to go.

The only way for us to see any good in this mess we’re in is to deepen our trust in Him. It’s only then we’ll be able to recognize and celebrate the blessings and surprises He places around every corner.
