Jocelyn had to turn a two-liter soda bottle, and herself, into a famous person for a project at school. She chose Queen Elizabeth II. She also had to research the Queen and share what she learned with the class.

After spending so much time focusing on Queen Elizabeth, Jocelyn began to think of her as a friend. In fact, she now wants to write a letter and send it to her, along with a craft she made.

Initially, I was trying to discourage Jocelyn. There’s really no chance the Queen will ever write back. But then I had a different thought altogether.

Why am I squelching Jocelyn’s desire to think big? I’m not doing her any favors by forcing her to play small. Who knows: Maybe the Queen will write back. Maybe she’ll even invite Jocelyn to visit her in Buckingham Palace. Crazier things have happened.

If you look at all the great people in history, they didn’t rise to greatness by playing small. They went out on a limb, thought outside the box, took big risks. They didn’t hide their greatness under a basket. Instead, they honored God by using the gifts He gave them. Moreover, they trusted Him 100%, and jumped into everything with both feet.

As Marianne Williamson says in her book A Return to Love: “Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us.” She goes on to say that when we do shine bright, we inspire others to do the same.

I’m done with bringing my kids’ dreams down to earth. How dare I limit them, even the slightest bit. From now on, I’m supporting them completely, no matter how crazy the idea.

All it takes is one person’s belief in us to make us feel like we can fly. It’s time for me to be that one person for my kids.
