Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights. James 1:17
A small plane flew over my house yesterday, leaving a long, white tail of smoke in the sky. It reminded me of those airplanes that used to write messages in the sky: “Marry me, Susan” or “Happy Birthday Joe” Oh, how times have changed. Now those messages are conveyed on billboards and massive teletrons at sporting events.
As I stared up at the sky, longing to see one of those old-fashioned love notes spelled out in smoke, I began noticing other love notes written by God.
The trees that stand in my backyard have leaves that span the gamut – in color and texture. Not only are they a statement of God’s craftsmanship, but they filter out the heat of the sun, creating a cool and shady place for me to be.
The birds that visit my feeders are stunning. Their vibrantly colored feathers are so intricate, and the hummingbirds move their wings so fast, they seem celestial. Moreover, their playful behavior raises my spirit, reminding me to lighten up and enjoy what’s before me.
The stars at night can boggle the mind with so many pin-pricks of light. Like God’s conversation with Abraham, they’re a covenant and a testament to the fact that He’s created it all for us.
And the list goes on. The more we look, the more we’ll see.
Sure, times have changed, and we’ve lost some unique traditions and simpler things along the way. But God is pursuing us constantly, and gifting us with His heart all the time. So, let’s have new eyes to see all the love notes from Him, and respond to them with gratitude on our lips.
Questions for Reflection:
• Have I taken the time to raise my eyes recently and see all the details of God’s magnificent world?
• Do I recognize that He created it all with love for me to enjoy?

Claire, this post is absolutely beautiful! I do miss so many marvelous things of the past, but I needed your reminder that God’s gifts surround us every day in new and wonderful ways! xoxo

Thanks so much Mom! My struggle today is finding beauty in the fact that today is the 87th day of rain this summer!!! So much easier to see grace in the sunshine.
